  • rather typical zoom lens for hobbyists
  • estimated retail price 415 EUR
  • in my use from 4/2006 to 11/2008
  • got replaced by primes to get sharper photos on large apertures
  • has a focal length range (28 mm - 75 mm) that fits nice with 1.6x crop body for cat show photography
  • offers constant maximum aperture over the focal length range which is a must for using manual exposure mode
  • very lightweight
  • focuses rather close (“Macro” stands for that)
  • has a good reputation to be the best lens in its class
  • like most zooms soft wide open compared to primes (starts to work better at f/5.6)
  • not as usable in cat show photography as I thought
  • all plastic except the metallic EF mount
  • the focusing motor is a little slow
  • although carries “Macro” label isn't a real macro lens
