Facts
- rather typical zoom lens for hobbyists
- estimated retail price 415 EUR
- in my use from 4/2006 to 11/2008
- got replaced by primes to get sharper photos on large apertures
Pros
- has a focal length range (28 mm - 75 mm) that fits nice with 1.6x crop body for cat show photography
- offers constant maximum aperture over the focal length range which is a must for using manual exposure mode
- very lightweight
- focuses rather close (“Macro” stands for that)
- has a good reputation to be the best lens in its class
Cons
- like most zooms soft wide open compared to primes (starts to work better at f/5.6)
- not as usable in cat show photography as I thought
- all plastic except the metallic EF mount
- the focusing motor is a little slow
- although carries “Macro” label isn't a real macro lens
