Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM
Review of Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM standard lens. Review created 2008, latest update 2013.
Facts
- everything else in this lens is perfect but the front focusing tendency
- estimated retail price 420 EUR
- in my use from 11/2008 to current date
- replaced my worn out Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Pros
- excellent image quality (all you get with Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM and then some more)
- very pleasing transition from in-focus areas to out-of-focus areas (indicates a brilliant optical formula)
- clearly the best bokeh I've ever seen on a 50 mm lens
- better bokeh than many longer focal length lenses
- can be pushed to f/1.4 with ease
- an extremely well built metal body lens with the feel of high quality
Cons
- has a constant front focusing tendency especially at close focusing distances (even after the lens was checked by the Finnish importer Foka)
- large for a 50 mm prime
- heavy for a 50 mm prime
