The small NAS server: long-term impressions

2023-09-23: Writing in progress…

Impressions after six months written in 2021-02-21.

The system has been running for about six months now and I'm still very happy of this setup.

So far there has been no major issues. There has been one or two incidents that the system didn't shut down properly by pressing the power button and then refused to start normally after powering the system back up. A console access was required to get the system up and running again.

I have installed the MiniDLNA plugin and DLNA apperas to be a more simpler and also reliable way to share music over the home network compared to SMB/CIFS.

Impressions after two and half years written in 2023-01-05.

This NAS system has been running without major issues.

The system currently servers data from both the internal disk and from external USB disks.

I stated in my impressions after six months of use that I found MiniDLNA to be a better way to share media files than SMB/CIFS. I run into issue with DLNA or MiniDLNA that the shares kept disappearing. I tried frequent restart of the service and lowering the interval between the service broadcasts but these did not help. I ended up disabling MiniDLNA service and now share media files via SMB/CIFS without issues.

I upgraded the installation from OVM 5 to OVM 6. This was an easy operation. I took copies of system settings like mount points and screenshots of some OVM gui pages just to be safe. Then I ran command omv-release-upgrade, did a reboot and applied settings change on OMV gui. And this was all. Everything including plugins seems to work without issues.
